'Frankenstein' by Mary Shelley

This blog is a part of a thinking activity assigned by yesha Bhatt Ma'am. In this blog I am going to discuss a novel 'Frankenstein' written by Mary Shelley.

Mary Shelley:

Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley was born on 30 August 1797 in London, England and died on 1 February 1851 in London, England. She is very famous female writer. She is one of the earliest female writers and romantic novelists of English literature. She was married to poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Her works:

  • Falkner
  • Frankenstein
  • History of a Six Week's Tour.
  • The Fortunes of Perkin Warbeck.
  • The Last Men
  • The Journals of Mary Shelley
  • Valperga

Frankenstein:

Mary and Percy traveled about Europe for a time. They struggled financially and faced the loss of their first child in 1815. Mary delivered a baby girl who only lived for a few days. The following summer, the Shelleys were in Switzerland with Jane Clairmont, Lord Byron and John Polidori. The group entertained themselves one rainy day by reading a book of ghost stories. Lord Byron suggested that they all should try their hand at writing their own horror story. It was at this time that Mary Shelley began work on what would become her most famous novel, 'Frankenstein'.

Mary Shelley’s best-known book is 'Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus' a text that is part Gothic novel and part philosophical novel. It is also often considered an early example of science fiction. It narrates the dreadful consequences that arise after a scientist has artificially created a human being.

1) What made the creature a monster?

Monsters in literature are normally characterized as a creature that possesses some type of inhuman qualities or deformities. The term monster can also refer to a person who has done a terrible thing in life that poorly affects others around them. In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, society continually regards Victor's creation as a monster, both physically and psychologically. Though the being has the physical characteristics of a monster, it is only after he is repeatedly rejected by society that he adopts the personality and behavior of a monster. Thus, society plays a large role in shaping the monster's personality and behavior. Because society expects him to act like a monster, he inevitably becomes one. The monster created by Victor Frankenstein is rejected by human society because of his appearance. Mary Shelley explores the feelings of creature totally ignored and abused by society. The novel became a reflection of the inner state of Mary Shelly. It reflects the sufferings and losses of the author.

The monster complains that his maker and mankind are moving his nature from goodness and benevolence to wrath and violence. He attempts the company of men and is rejected with horror, fear and abuse. Physical appearance becomes the main barrier for the creature. It does not allow it to build normal relations in the society. People do not make any attempts to find out about the inner world of the Monster after they see how it looks. Here is a dialogue of creature,

"Cursed, cursed creator! Why did I live? Why, in that instant, did I not extinguish the spark of existence which you had so wantonly bestowed? I know not; despair had not yet taken possession of me; my feelings were those of rage and revenge. I could with pleasure have destroyed the cottage and its inhabitants and have glutted myself with their shrieks and misery.” (Shelley,98)

The theme of social rejection is one of the main themes of the novel. The author shows the consequences of social opinion. People do not give the creature any chances only because it looks terrible to them.

2) Why society has rejected Victor's idea of experiment and then the result of his experiment?

Science fiction is a genre that demonstrates the impacts of advanced technology and science. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is a science fiction novel, in which life is created in a manner that brings about a question of ethics and morality. This novel was written during the Age of Enlightenment, when people began to question morals and traditional ways of thinking with a fascination for science and discovery. Frankenstein allows readers to understand the importance of experimentation being done in a morally correct manner to avoid unforeseen, bad consequences.

Victor is a scientist who studied natural sciences with the goal of understanding the concepts of life and death. He dedicated nearly two years of his life to the creation of his monster from various body parts. The creation of the monster was so uncontrolled that it produced a being that absolutely mortified his creator. Victor is a passionate scientist about his experiment, but his obsessions lead him to collect dead bodies to reach his goal without thinking about consequences. Society does not accept his ideas of experiment because it's an unethical idea. After creating a monster people also hate the creation of victor. Society never accepts monsters only because of his looks.

3) Who is suffering from deformity in the novel? Which kind of deformity and disability there? Who decided what deformity is?

The idea of deformity, that the body departs from the form of a normal human body depends upon perception. If something is described as deformed, it is different from the form that you expect, even if you couldn’t specify in advance exactly what you expected to encounter. This novel described monster as a disable. The monster was constantly shunned by society because of his physical appearance. He is a ugly and scary. This look was not his fault, it was artificially given to him. Victor and every other character in the novel treat the creature horribly, by neglecting and attacking him due to his questionable outward appearance. Human society decides that a person is disable or not if someone is not looking good then humans become judgemental for the person.

Victor is also suffering from deformity. He wants to take a place of God. His experiment is unethical; he makes a wrong decision and never thinks about the future of this decision.

4)  villain in 'Frankenstein'

Who is villain Victor or Monster? Monster is not good in physical appearance and people treated him as a villain but he was just mistreated by society. Many readers consider Victor Frankenstein the villain of the story due to his repetitive decisions to abandon and avoid his own 'mistake,'the irresponsible choice of creating the monster in the first place, and his obvious negligence of the Creature’s feelings.

Victor is a real villain who destroys his life while the creature is just an outcast in society who yearns for affection and acceptance.Victor's selfishness is what ultimately destroyed him and others as well.

5)  Search for life

Victor is a scientist. He makes a creature monster. Monster killed Victor's wife and his loved ones and he is on his way to find the creature and kill him. And the creature is also in the way to kill Victor. Robert set out to reach the tip of the North pole. These three characters are central characters in the novel. Robert has a dream to reach the end of the North pole where he tries to search a life. Monster wants love and life From Victor, he demands the female partner for him. This also presents a theme of search for life in this novel.
