Thinking activity

Thinking activity : Plato's objection and Aristotle's poetics

1.How far do you agree with Plato’s objection to freedom of expression and artistic liberty enjoyed by creative writers? Name the texts (novels, plays, poems, movies, TV soaps etc which can be rightfully objected and banned with reference to Plato’s objections)

Yes, I agree with Plato's objection to freedom of expression and artists liberty enjoyed by creative writers. Freedom of expression is also important but freedom is good as long as it does not become harmful to society.

We can see that so many T.V serials, movies and games are creating bad impression in society and spoiled the mind of people.       For example, Balveer, shaktiman, and games like BLUE WHALE CHALLENGE WHICH DRIVES CHILDREN TO COMMIT SUICIDE.

2.With reference to the literary texts you have studied during B.A. programme, write brief note on the texts which followed Aristotelian literary tradition (i.e. his concept of tragedy, catharsis, tragic hero with hamartia etc)

During my B.A. program I studied many plays like Othello, All my son's, Tughlaq. "Othello" is my one of favourite tragic play written by Shakespeare.

Othello is protagonist of the play. Othello confirms Aristotle's defination of the tragic hero. we feel all these things like humartia, tragic flaws, error of judgement. In the end of the play Othello kills his wife desdemona. Than he came to know that his wife is innocent he felt guilty and killed him self. We feel pity for Othello.

3.Have you studied any tragedies during B.A. programme? Who was/were the tragic protagonist/s in those tragedies? What was their ‘hamartia’?

Yes, I have studied tragedy during my B.A. program.

1.Othello:  in this play Tragic protagonist was Othello, hamartia: Extreme jealousy, blind trust on iago

2.Muhammad bin Tughlaq:. In this play Tragic protagonist was Tughlaq, Hamartia:  idealism

3.Bluest eye: pecola was a tragic protagonist, Hamartia: Racism, believe in miracles

4.Hairy ape:  yank was a tragic protagonist, Hamartia:  excessive pride in his dominant Nature
